If you’re a mom – first off, we SEE you! Our owner and founder, Mindy, is a mom herself and several of our female trainers are also mothers! We know first-hand how demanding, yet rewarding your role is and how difficult it can be to get some time for yourself.
Balancing the demands of raising children, pursuing a career, and trying to keep your household in order is HARD and often leaves little room for your own needs.
However, taking care of your physical and mental well-being is necessary for both you and your family.
Below, we’ll share some valuable fitness tips specifically tailored for you to help you better incorporate regular and effective fitness routines into your hectic schedule so you can prioritize more self-care. Moms especially cannot pour from an empty cup!
Schedule Time For Your Workouts
As a busy mom, it may be beneficial to schedule your sessions just like any other professional appointment or family commitment.
Block off dedicated time in your personal planner for exercise. To make sure you adhere to this designated exercise time, try treating it as a non-negotiable activity. Unless there’s an emergency, everything else can wait until after your workout ends. But we get it- life happens! However, any exercise or movement is better than none so even if you just have 15 minutes- make those 15 minutes count! You owe it to yourself.
By having it scheduled in advance, you are more likely to stick to your fitness routine. To help make things less challenging, consider scheduling your workouts during the early morning hours before the kids wake up, during nap times, in the evenings when they’re doing homework/involved in other activities, or even include them in your workout!
The key is to find a time that works best for you and to prioritize this important time for yourself.
Aim For Short But Effective Workouts
Once you’ve determined which time works best for your workouts, you may run into another challenge: it doesn’t seem like enough time to accomplish any of your fitness goals.
While many exercise and fitness programs emphasize the duration of the workout as the key to success, that’s not really the case. Lengthy workout sessions aren’t the only solution.
In fact, shorter workouts are especially effective when done correctly.
Workout programs, such as super-slow strength training, that focus on the quality of the exercise rather than the duration of the workout can deliver excellent results in a fraction of the time. These workouts improve cardiovascular health and even allow your body to burn calories after the workout. So essentially you continue to benefit from your workout while commuting to work or sitting at your desk.
Consider incorporating these types of workouts into your daily routine, even if it’s just for 15 minutes at a time throughout the day.
Involve Your Family In Your Workouts
Another way to help incorporate everyday exercise into your busy life is to involve your children into your fitness routine whenever possible. Not only does this help you stick to your designated workout time, it also helps set a great example for your kids to prioritize their own health and wellness.
Engage in fun activities like bike riding, hiking, or playing sports together. You can find ways to turn household chores or everyday activities into mini-workouts by involving the whole family.. For example, you and the kids can squat while picking up toys, do some lunges while vacuuming, create an obstacle course outside, or have a push-up contest!
Encouraging your kids to participate in these exercises and modified chores not only keeps everyone active but also allows you to enjoy more quality family time.
Have an Accountability Partner
Sometimes the only people who truly understand your everyday challenges are other moms. With that being said, turn to the other moms in your life who have similar fitness goals to help each other stand by your exercise plans and fulfill your workout commitments. Or consider working with a trainer (maybe even one who is a mom herself) who can push you and help hold you accountable.
When you form this type of support system, you can workout together, call each other when you need a pep talk, share exercise tips and healthy recipes, and so much more.
Not only will you help motivate each other, but you’ll also enjoy the benefits of increased social interaction and support. Community is essential – especially for moms!
Don’t Forget About Your Mental Well-Being
Fitness isn’t just about physical exercise; it’s also about taking care of your mental well-being. Exercise not only improves our physical health, but our mental health as well.
As a busy mom, it’s important for you to also prioritize self-care activities that help you relax and recharge. Try your best to carve out some time for yourself each day to engage in activities you enjoy, such as reading, meditating, yoga, crafting or just taking a walk in nature.
By taking better care of yourself, you can take better care of your family.
